I can speak from personal experience regarding the advantages of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program as a Cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA). The curriculum instills respect for authority, discipline, and brotherhood within the Cadets. However, participation in ROTC is optional for all students. In this article, I'll justify the need for ROTC's introduction in all Philippine colleges and institutions.
The ROTC program uses military training to hone youths' leadership and discipline. Training in physical fitness, military drills, and marksmanship are part of the curriculum. It also entails volunteer work in the community, including medical missions, training for emergency response, and tree planting. These initiatives seek to create in young people a sense of nationalism, discipline, and voluntarism.
In the Philippines, the ROTC program is now optional. Nonetheless, there have been calls to make ROTC mandatory for all college students.[1] I wholeheartedly back this endeavor. The nation’s future will be significantly impacted by mandatory ROTC because it will create accountable and disciplined individuals.
The growth of discipline and leadership abilities is one of ROTC's most important benefits. Cadets learn timeliness, obedience, and respect for authority during their ROTC training, which helps them develop discipline. Additionally, Cadets gain leadership and teamwork abilities, which are crucial for success in any line of business. Individuals in any career can benefit from ROTC training, not just those in the military.
The promotion of patriotism and nationalism is another advantage of mandatory ROTC. The curriculum fosters a love of the nation and a sense of duty to preserve and serve it. As Cadets engage in community service projects, it also contributes to developing a culture of voluntarism and civic engagement.
Furthermore, the country's security issues may be resolved if ROTC is mandatory. In the Philippines, terrorism, crime, and insurgency pose severe security threats. The required ROTC course can aid in building a reserve force that can be called upon for security and emergency response.
Mandatory ROTC critics claim that it is a waste of time and money. They contend that it is optional for civilian life and that other initiatives may better use the time and resources.[2] The advantages of ROTC, however, transcend military education. It fosters the development of well-rounded individuals with transferable abilities across all fields of employment.
Finally, ROTC should be made compulsory in all Philippine states and colleges. The youngsters participating in the program learn responsibility, leadership, and patriotism. Additionally, it encourages volunteering and can build a reserve force for security and disaster relief. I have benefited from the same training as a PNPA Cadet, which may significantly influence the nation's future.
